Since When is That Reality?
Has anyone else ever wondered how some big network executive can leave people stranded in a remote location with little to no supplies, ask them to survive more than a month in attempts to win a million dollars, and call it a "reality show"? Or how about throwing a bachelor in the middle of 20 gorgeous women, let him live like a king, and then ask him to take his pick for a bride. Then there is my favorite. Grab a bunch of "average Joes" and let them fight over a former beauty queen until she picks one to be her prince charming. How are any of those a reality? They sound more like fantasy to me.
Well, believe it or not, all those shows are huge cash cows for the networks. People can't seem to get enough "reality" so they live it vicariously through others by watching their wildest fantasies come true on television. Are we really that desperate to live a different life, a better life? I think that these chickens tell it all.
It's getting harder and harder for us to differentiate between fantasy and reality. The problem lies not in our concept of reality, but rather in our understanding of truth. Today's philosophy would tell us that truth is a matter of interpretation or opinion. What truth is to me may not necessarily be truth to the next guy. Like these silly chickens, some can look truth straight in the face and still deny its reality. Truth is not biased, nor does it need our faith to be a real. Truth simply is and we cannot escape it. In reality those chickens are staring at their destiny.
Here are some truths. George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. What goes up must come down. We cannot live without eating, drinking, and breathing. We will all one day pass from this life to the next. These are all inescapable truths that have been proven through science and history. To argue these truths would only end in embarrassment.
There are however, other truths that some feel the necessity to argue and even ignore. Safe sex isn't. Cheaters always lose. Drugs and alcohol kill. Abortion is murder. Love is forever. How can others contest these truths in light of science and history? Ignorance, avoidance or denial, take your pick. They are all realities as well.
The reality is we do not determine what truth is and what it is not. We can deny, ignore and even attempt to disprove the reality that George Washington was our first President, but the truth remains. My faith has no effect on its actuality. Yet some will use that same logic to excuse their lack of belief in the truth. They create their own reality like a crazy episode of the Twilight Zone. They can stare at the truth, even believe it in part, but then they choose to live in a fantasy.
What about you? Are you living in reality or willful ignorance, avoidance, or even denial? The truth is out there. In fact, the truth will set you free. Can you handle it?
