Reality: Who Will Rescue Them?

1918-1919, a fifth of the worlds population was infected with influenza. This pandemic killed 675,000 Americans, 10 times more than those who died in WWI (over 20 million worldwide).

Malaria now infects some 300 million people each year, killing at least 2 million children and adults. Two children die of malaria every minute.

The World Health Organization estimated that, worldwide, between 2.8 and 3.5 million people with AIDS died in 2004.

Webster defines an epidemic as "affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time." Those suffering from the Katrina disaster in Louisianaa and Mississippi could potentially be affected by an epidemic of cholera, Hepatitis A, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, or even the West Nile Virus. Who will rescue them?

Dr. Jose Luis Soto, the nation's leading medication and pharmacy expert said, "Flood waters and stagnant sewage are a breeding ground for the rats, rodents, and mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as the Hepatitis A, Cholera, Typhoid, and other viruses. Local supplies of vaccines, unprepared for this natural disaster will not be sufficient."

There is not only the potential of a physical epidemic of sickness and disease, but one of a critical spirit, an apathetic heart, and even rebellion. To many people are focusing on a political agenda criticizinging their opponents rather than teaming up to rescue those in need. Others are simply apathetic and chose to hold to their freedom to do nothing. Unfortunately, we also have those who are rebellious and refuse to be rescued. Instead they would rather steal, rape and kill for pleasure. This rescue mission will not be easy.

God Bless our national leaders as they use wisdom in recovering our nation from this natural diaster. God bless our civil servants and National Guardsman as they risk their lives to rescue our countrymen. God bless the nations who have given our country money and supplies to help us through this catastrophe.

The rescue efforts have taken many different people, from all walks of life, stretching out their hands to pull someone from raging waters. The rescue efforts have taken millions of dollars, not just from our government and the gifts of other nations, but from people like you and I from every socioeconomic stratus, donating money, food, and other goods. Thank you. With Your help and God's blessing, this rescue mission will succeed!
