To Watch or Not To Watch

A few have commented to me wondering why I didn’t add FOX into the mix of my reviews, so here you go.

FOX - Fox Broadcasting Company

FOX, born in 1986, became the fourth mainstream network broadcasting company and portrayed itself as a somewhat edgy, irreverent, youth oriented network compared to it’s rivals. They pushed the envelop of morality and ethics with shows like Married with Children, The Tracey Ullman Show and The Simpsons, which has become the longest running sitcom and animated series in U.S. history. The success of The Simpsons launched other adult oriented cartoons like King of the Hill, Family Guy and Futurama. Other notably successful shows included Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Ally McBeal, In Living Color, and my all time favorite, The X-Files.

In recent years, FOX has cleaned up its act and produced some more reputable shows that although still edgy, are more palatable morally. With shows like 24, The O.C., American Idol and the addition of the NFL – including the Super Bowl, FOX has grown to the highest-rated broadcast network among young adults. Not bad for a network with only 20 years of experience!

The Good, the Bad & the Interesting

GOOD: American Idol
FOX put huge amounts of money and effort into reality television with shows like Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?, Temptation Island, World’s Wildest Police Videos and Joe Millionaire. However, none have even come close to the history making phenomenon of American Idol.

Now in it’s 7th season, American Idol seeks to discover the best young singers in the country through a series of auditions. Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Puala Abdul critique the performances and their judgments later help to facilitate the voting by the millions who watch. Filled with drama, humor and gifted musical performances, this show seems to be a must watch. Some dreams do come true!

BAD: The entire Sunday night lineup!
The fact that most churches have done away with Sunday evening services has left an open door for the enemy and he has capitalized on it with FOX’s Sunday night line-up. The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad are all adult oriented cartoon comedies that demoralize America’s and degrade the American family. To be honest, I also think that they “dumb-down” our once sophisticated sense of humor.

INTERESTING: Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles
Finally FOX has returned to the sci-fi television world! Many have criticized the premature cancellation of some sci-fi series like Firefly, Sliders and Dark Angel, and if you’re like me, you’ve mourned the loss of the X-Files as well (although a new movie is planed for July 25, 2008).

This series focuses on the character Sarah Conner, who is on the run with her son after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Prompted by the return of Terminators into their lives, Sarah and John decide to stop running and focus on stopping the creation of Skynet. They are aided by Cameron, a Terminator who poses as a female student at John's school and whose mission is to protect John. Meanwhile, FBI Agent James Ellison pursues Sarah and John with the belief that Sarah is deranged.

Although watched by 18.6 million viewers during it’s pilot episode, and the positive reviews by USA Today and The New York Times, the show does include some sci-fi violence and scary ellements.

hey PR! that is pretty interesting how you posted what to watch and what to not watch because I just did a project for english about media influence...i went back to the date that tv originated and went through the decades and showed how drastically the shows changed and my closing statement was, "So is tv and media merely the result of the degradation of society or is the degradation of society simply the result of tv and media?"
