God's Top Ten

Everyone loves a good Top Ten list. Top tens have gained notoriety by MTV, David Letterman and ESPN, but the first and most famous Top Ten is recorded in Exodus 20:1-17...the Ten Commandments.
The Ten Commandments are the revelation of God’s will for those who are already His.
The purpose of the covenant was to create a new relationship between God and man. A relationship that is possible only by the grace of God. Since we have been freed from slavery to sin, these commandments become a sense of duty not just a list of do's and don'ts.

The first four are VERTICAL in their orientation and have to do with our relationship with God. The last six are HORIZONTAL and deal with our relationship with man.

It brings it all back to our main PURPOSE! Loving God - Loving People

Jesus summed it up in a similar way when he was asked what the greatest commandment was. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:36-40)

The commandments, God’s Top Ten, are not requirements for salvation and eternal life, nor are they God’s way of putting the hammer down and controlling us. God gave us His Top Ten so that…

1. We will understand how to act toward Him

2. We will understand how to act toward others

3. So that we may live a blessed life (Deuteronomy 6:1-9)

Join us the next six weeks at Altared on Wednesday nights as we take a fresh look at God's Top Ten.
