The Invitation

I don't know about you, but sometimes I wonder why churched people don't bring more visitors. We know that church isn't designed to be a "bless me" club, but rather for the purpose of winning the lost and equipping the Christian to serve God in their world. I was discussing this with one my closest friends today and this blog is the result of our conversation.

I think that sometimes church people need to realize that inviting their friends or co-workers to church will never be enough. Many times we will invite them to church and if we don't get a positive response, we simply never ask them again. It's not just about inviting them though.

If you'll notice in Scripture, Jesus never invited anyone to hear him preach or be prayed for. The only people he ever gave an invitation to were the 12 disciples. Other than that, the way he lived was invitation enough that literally thousands of people would come to hear him talk and be prayed for.

Perhaps if we, as church people, would live the kind of life that Jesus lived (and challenged us to live) others would want to come and check out our church and see what all the fuss is about. We can have all the right worship music, the awesome sounding band, lights, projectors and even an awesome preacher, and we may even get some visitors and salvations. BUT the real key is found in the life we live that attracts others to what's inside of us. It has to be real. It has to be deep and intimate. It has to be attractive, positive, and energetic.

You can have all the bells and whistles of a modern day church, but they won't really notice or remember it. What they will notice and clig to is the reality of true life lived out day-to-day. I guess the question for us to answer is what do we want more - bells and whistles or a good invitation.
