Underdogs

Have you ever noticed how society loves to hear stories of underdogs making it to the top and becoming winners? Look at all the reality shows like The Biggest Loser, extreme Makeover, Survivor, and Deal or No Deal. They have us glued to our televisions cheering on strangers as if we have some sort of intimate relationship. We do the same to sitcoms like My Name is Earl, Lost, Justice, Prison Break, and new shows like Friday Night Lights and Hero.

We get attached to the underdogs. We want to see them overcome their life's trials and obsessions to become successful and happy. Perhaps we get so attached and cheer them on so passionately because we are living our lives vicariously through these make-believe underdogs. Subconsciously we feel that if they can overcome and become someone better, richer, and more successful; maybe we can too.

This clearly shows us how much the world is truly searching, passionately desiring, something more...Something deeper...Something that they don't have...Something that they're not sure how to get. However, they don't realize that what they long for is easily within reach. What is worse, we have exactly what they need and subconsciously want, but we've kept it ourselves.

Perhaps we're afraid and intimidated - people can be very cruel. Maybe we don't think they will listen - it's not a very politically correct message. Besides we are pretty busy making a life for ourselves. Who has time anyway. We're too busy watching our favorite TV shows.

"DO YOU NOT SAY, FOUR MONTHS MORE AND THEN THE HARVEST? I TELL YOU, OPEN YOU EYES AND LOOK AT THE FIELDS! THEY ARE RIPE FOR HARVEST." (John 4:34)
