To Watch or Not To Watch

Here is Part two of three in our review of prime time television for the new 2008 viewing season. Yesterday we talked about NBC, today we focus on CBS, and tomorrow will hit ABC.

CBSColumbia Broadcasting System

CBS is the world’s most successful television franchise and is currently most known for CSI (Crime Scene Investigation), Survivor and The Unit. There is a different CSI on almost every night of the week. CSI, CSI New York, CSI Miami and NCIS (Navy CIS) are not for the squeamish with their affinity for graphic violence and detailed autopsies. However, my love for CBS dates back to it’s Star Trek days…The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and even Enterprise! Now that’s quality television.

The Good, the Bad & the Interesting

GOOD: Survivor
In a SURVIVOR first, 10 ultra-fans of the series will take on 10 former castaways to compete as FANS vs. FAVORITES. The two tribes will be marooned amidst the Rock Islands of Palau, Micronesia. The skills of the former castaways will be put to the test while the tribe of first-time competitors will see if their enthusiasm and passion for the game is enough to distinguish them as worthy competitors. Who will prevail to become Sole Survivor?

BAD: Swingtown
From the director of "Big Love" and "Rome," SWINGTOWN peeks into the shag-carpeted suburban homes of the 1970s to find couples reveling in the sexual and social revolution that introduced open marriages and women's liberation. During this heady era of provocative change, Susan and Bruce Miller move their family to an affluent Chicago suburb in search of a sense of community where they meet their new neighbors, Tom and Trina Decker, a striking, outgoing couple on the hunt who redefine the term "neighborhood watch." After a mind-blowing evening with them, Susan and Bruce realize that couples in this town share much more than recipes, local gossip and a view of Lake Michigan, and are worlds apart from their former conservative neighbors, Janet and Roger. In a changing social climate--defined by its music, fashion and style--everyone in SWINGTOWN is confronted with personal choices, experimentation and shifting attitudes.

INTERESTING: Dexter
He'll charm fellow officers with a doughnut, wile away a Sunday with his girlfriend Rita, or chop up a victim and package their body parts in plastic bags. Hiding beneath the mundane exterior and contrived façade of Dexter, a charming blood spatter expert for the Miami Police Department, is an obsession with meting his own twisted brand of justice: stalking and murdering the guilty. This show originally aired on Showtime and included graphic violence, language and nudity. How they’ll edit this for TV will be interesting.
